Henkel Helps Fund Renovation of WWII U.S. General George C. Marshall's Home -- Veteran's Day set for completion of National Historical Landmark in Washington D.C.'s backyard

Henkel of America, Inc. donated $50,000 to support the restoration and refurbishment of Dodona Manor, the Leesburg, Virginia home of World War II United States General George C. Marshall.
Gulph Mills, Penn. -- October 31, 2005 -- Henkel of America, Inc. donated $50,000 to support the restoration and refurbishment of Dodona Manor, the Leesburg, Virginia home of World War II United States General George C. Marshall.

Located approximately 35 miles from Washington, D.C., Dodona Manor is a national historic landmark built during the first half of the 19th century. General Marshall and his wife Katherine owned Dodona Manor from 1941 to 1959 and came to call it "home" after his long and distinguished career in the military.

Significant corporate sponsorship comes from Henkel of America, Inc., the North American affiliate of Henkel KGaA. German-based Henkel is a Global Fortune 500 company and a market leader in home care, personal care and adhesives, sealants and surface treatment. Several of Henkel's products, such as the wallpaper paste Metylan, were used in the Dodona Manor renovation and will continue to be used for maintenance.

"Henkel is gratified to honor the life and help restore the home of such an influential leader and to help make a difference in this community," said John E. Knudson, President of Henkel of America, Inc. "Just as the Marshall Plan laid the groundwork to rebuild the infrastructure and economy of Western Europe after World War II, Henkel's support in the renovation of Dodona Manor will continue our long legacy of helping people build and renovate structures through our expertise."

In addition to this project being a natural business fit for Henkel's adhesives, sealants, surface treatment and home care businesses, Henkel's sponsorship also demonstrates its strong corporate commitment to the United States.

The $7 million Dodona Manor renovation project was broken out into four phases:
  • Phase I - Exterior -- Includes roof, window and outside paint repair and restoration; completed February 2004
  • Phase II - Interior - Included wallpaper, furniture and carpeting restoration; slated for completion in September 2005
  • Phase III - Gardens and Grounds; slated for completion in fall 2006
  • Phase IV - Ongoing Conservation and maintenance

The Dodona Manor restoration project will be complete on Veteran's Day weekend beginning November 11, 2005, at which time the life and legacy of General Marshall and the completion of this project will be celebrated at a VIP reception. Dodona Manor will be open to the public on weekends starting January 9, 2006.
