Henkel Puerto Rico Launches Energy Reduction Program
Henkel was able to save on power consumption and achieve a more efficient lighting system at its waste water treatment plant by installing 12 100-watt LED (light emitting diode) fixtures to replace 16 250-watt high-pressure sodium fittings that are used to light the tank and walkways. The result is a 75 percent reduction in energy use and the quality of illumination is vastly improved. A further benefit of the LED lighting is that it can be expected to last 10 years, which reduces maintenance costs.
Henkel has also reduced energy use at its waste handling building by installing a daylighting system. A daylighting system captures sunlight through a dome on the roof and channels it down into the building through reflective tubing. The daylighting system operates during daytime hours without electricity and also provides better lighting performance than the old high-pressure sodium lights. The daylighting system takes advantage of Puerto Rico’s abundant sunshine, which thanks to its location in the Caribbean averages 12 hours of light a day, with even more in the summer months.
Both projects were initiated by Henkel’s “Green Team” at the Sabana Grande site, which is looking for ways to meet Henkel’s company-wide goal of reducing energy consumption by 15 percent per metric ton of output by 2012. The Green Team is also working on simple options such as installing timers to shut off ceiling lights automatically, and installing timers on all air conditioning units.
