High Temperature Assembly
Overview – Henkel provides film adhesives and primers along with paste adhesive for engine nacelle assembly.
Overview Expanded
Our Hysol® line of film adhesives including Hysol EA 9657™, EA 9689™ and our newest product Hysol EA 9658™ possesses the most advanced flow control to allow bonded assembly without whole blockage of honeycomb and perforated screens. These materials operate at 177°C/350ºF for thousands of hours without thermal degradation. They are designed to withstand the rigors of continuous high temperature operating environments and meet the demanding requirements of jet engine manufacturers, engine nacelle producers and commercial aircraft manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing.
News/Events/Products
Goodrich has selected Hysol EA 9658 nacelle film along with the companion primer Hysol EA 9258.1™ for Boeing 787 nacelle usage. The product is currently in qualification and is expected to be in production parts in 2007. Hysol EA 9658 features our newest flow control technology and represents a new standard in nacelle adhesives. It is expected to maintain its thermal stability after 6000 hours of extended heat aging and is designed with increased toughness to allow both increased durability in the shop floor during secondary drilling and fastening operations. Hysol EA 9658 is designed for today’s metallic nacelle construction as well as tomorrow’s composite nacelle construction.
Benefits
High temperature assembly products have been used on both composite and metallic honeycomb structure for over 20 years. We have complete lines of complementary materials ranging from syntactic cores to surfacing films and have perhaps the largest database of high temperature pastes and film adhesives.
Applications
Engine nacelle adhesive films are used to fabricate metallic (aluminum) and composite nacelle structure. The nacelle represents the acoustic and aerodynamic housing around a jet engine. It contains inner and outer fixed structures, cowlings, thrust reverser blocker doors and access doors. It is acoustic structure in that one of it’s purposes it to dissipate the high pitched sounds from the front of the engine. This structure requires adhesives with very low and controlled flow so that these key areas do not get blocked with adhesive, thereby remaining high in acoustic efficiency.
Case Histories
For the next generation of composite nacelles, the aerospace group of Henkel was asked to provide a new film adhesive along with a more environmentally compliant water based chromated primer. This new film adhesive was developed around leading thermoset polymer technology and possesses state of art heat resistance, a three times increase in toughness, a high Tag for extended hi temp operation along with optimal flow characteristics. This new adhesive is being qualified at leading engine nacelle manufactures to allow a quieter nacelle to be manufactured for tomorrow’s commercial aircraft.
