Racers have been using the Bonneville Salt Flats as a venue for breaking records beginning with the first unofficial record set there in 1914.  Each fall, a highly selective group of high performance vehicles competes to break world land-speed records at Cook’s Bonneville Shootout.  Since 2010, Loctite® has been the title sponsor of the event and will be continuing its sponsorship again this year. 


Why the Salt Flats?
The Salt Flats are located 88 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah, in a unique area that stretches over 30,000 acres.  Racers and spectators from all over the world flock to the area because Utah’s ideal scenery is coupled with perfect racing conditions.

World Records Broken in 2010:

  • In a highly emotional race that broke a record in existence for 45 years, Dallas, Texas-based Charles Nearburg sped to a two-way average of 414.316 mph in a naturally aspirated streamlined race car running on gasoline on Tuesday, September 21. 

  • Grass Valley racer Rocky Robinson of San Jose, California, once again claimed the Streamlined Motorcycle Land Speed Record on September 25, driving the Ack Attack, which bested the world record by 10 mph with a two-way average of 376.363 mph and a top one-way speed of 394 mph.

  • In his streamliner Speed Demon based out of Chattsworth, California, George Poteet raced to a two-way average of 363.673 mph in a turbo charged streamliner, breaking his own existing land speed record on Monday, September 20.

  • Mike Nish of Nish Motorsports raced the Royal Purple streamlined race car to a two-way average of 285.306 mph with a 300 cubic inch engine running alcohol on Thursday, September 23.
